On hillside lots the plant palette has to hold soil without blocking the sightlines that make the property worth its grade. Low, deep-rooted spreaders like trailing lantana, damianita, and creosote armor the slope faces, while sculptural agave, ocotillo, and a carefully placed foothill palo verde frame the McDowell Mountain views rather than hiding them. Keeping taller plants off the prime sightlines is a design decision we make lot by lot.
Steep ground also means night lighting has to be handled with care, both to show off the terracing and to avoid glare down the hillside, so we add low-voltage Sonoran landscape lighting with shielded fixtures aimed at the walls and specimens. On a FireRock or SunRidge Canyon lot with a wash crossing below the pad, we would stabilize the slope with rock and deep-rooted plants first, then fill the terraces with native cacti and desert plantings and armor the surface with decomposed granite and rock landscaping.
